PGIMER Witnesses Enhanced Response in Organ Donation: Another Braveheart Family’s Courageous Decision Impacts Five Lives

By Tricitynews Reporter
Chandigarh 13th April:- It was again exceptional courage and selfless sacrifice showcased by Madan Singh like those of other brave heart donor families when amid his own irreparable loss and dark tragedy, he consented to donate the organs of his brain dead son Ranjit Singh, giving second chance at life to three critically ill patients and sight to another two, thereby, impacting five lives in all herein PGIMER today.
Ranjit Singh, 32 years, a native of Rani Khet, Uttarakhand had accidentally fallen from second floor here in Chandigarh after which he was rushed to PGIMER with a severe head injury on 7th April . Despite best of the efforts, it was not possible to ensure Ranjit Singh’s recovery and the patient was re-evaluated and declared brain dead as per the THOA protocols today morning i.e. 13th April.
Following this, the family of Ranjit Singh exhibited exemplary and altruistic spirit to consent for organ donation of their dear son when the transplant coordinators flagged the matter with them. After their consent, the organ retrieval happened and Ranjit Singh’s liver, kidneys, pancreas and corneas were retrieved subsequently.
Post transplantation here at PGIMER, Ranjit Singh’s liver, kidneys and pancreas was used for three patients giving them a second chance at life. The corneas, when transplanted, will enable two more patients to restore their sight, thereby, helping five lives in all.
Shocked Hema Devi, sister of donor Ranjit Singh said that it is his brother’s chance to live through others. With the organ donation, at least we will be able to save some other families from the pain of losing their dear ones in their prime  that we are going through with his brother’s untimely death.
Detailing about the case, Dr Vipin Koushal, Nodal Officer, Regional Organ & Tissue Transplant Organization (ROTTO) PGIMER stated that organ donation in India is still at a nascent stage. But all the efforts being put into improving public awareness about this altruistic cause are definitely indicating positive signs as many noble minds like that of the family of Ranjit Singh are coming forward to take this brave and sensible decision when it matters the most. We can never thank them enough.
