By Tricitynews Reporter
Chandigarh 31st March:- The Company of Master Mariners of India (CMMI), Chandigarh Chapter organized a seminar on “Connecting India through Shipping” here today.
Dinesh Kumar, Associate Editor of The Tribune who was the chief guest on the occasion said that Inland waterways had never been on the priority lists of successive governments in the country and all energies have gone into land or air transportation systems which are overburdened and unable to handle the growing traffic.
India is strategically located in the Indian sub-continent and has about 7516 kilometers of coastline and is serviced by a total of 182 ports, 12 of them under a special status as Major Ports, handling 90 per cent of India’s international trade in terms of volume and 77 per cent in terms of value is moved by sea, he said.
However, there had been lack of information and awareness about maritime dimensions and the way it can contribute to the growth of Indian economy.
Dinesh Kumar informed that in many neighboring countries dependence on water ways for transportation has received equal attention where 47% in China, 40% in Europe and 35% in Bangladesh, the transportation is dependent upon waterways.
Capt Sivaraman Krishnamurthi, who had been the only world President of The Nautical Institute London, an international body of maritime professionals with presence in 110 countries, in his keynote address said that thanks to the active work by CMMI Chandigarh, the tricity area is developing into a shipping hub with many international shipping companies also setting up their base here.
Though the government has started focusing on hitherto neglected port infrastructure,  the development of inland waterways alone would contribute 2 percent to national GDP, Capt Krishnamurthi said.
Looking at the talent pool and strong presence of seafarers in Chandigarh, he announced that very soon the city would have the presence of The Nautical Institute of London.
On this occasion, Capt P S Ghotra, current Chairman of the CMMI Chandigarh handed over the leadership of the Chapter to Capt K.S. Sujlana for 2017-19.
The new executive committee for 2017-19 comprises Chairman: Capt K S Sujlana; Vice Chairman Capt M S Judge; General Secretary Arjun Singh, and Treasurer Dev Raj
Others who spoke on the occasion included Capt Jagdeep Singh Kahlon on “Inland Waterways of India: Challenges and Opportunities”, while Shaju Peter presented his insight into ‘Connecting India through Shipping’.
Arjun Singh, member of the Maritime Awareness Programme Society (MAPS) requested the professionals from diverse field to join the organization which is dedicated to generating awareness amongst the masses about shipping’s role in contributing to national and global economy.
Former President of CMMI Chandigarh, Capt M S Kahlon informed that the Chapter would be paying wreath at the War Memorial on 5th April on 54th National Maritime Day, to salute all those mariners who laid down their lives for the country.

Chandigarh Traders Association Submitted Memorandum to DC on Reduction In Collector Rates

By Tricitynews Reporter
Chandigarh 31st March:- Kamaljit Singh Panchhi President and L,C Arora Gen. Secy. Of Chandigarh Traders Association Sector 17 has submitted a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner U.T Chandigarh on REDUCTION OF COLLECTORATES in Chandigarh as under.
This is in reference with the subject mentioned above; we wish to bring to your kind notice that the collector rates in UT are abnormally high and   unrealistic than the prevailing market price. This serious anomaly has resulted in a complete breakdown of all transactions related to property in Chandigarh. The properties in the market are available at less than half of the price of current collector rates even after the revised collector rates last year wherein the Administration had reduced collector rates by 10% or so.
In this context we would like to bring to your notice that the Punjab Govt. has reduced the collector rates twice in last nine months resulting steep difference in our rates and their rates. The large gap in property prices in adjoining tricity has prompted the business establishments to migrate which directly mean revenue loss to exchequer. It is also worth to note that after the Demonetization, the value of property has crashed further by  40 to 50% and hence there is dire need to review collectorate in Chandigarh without any further delay.
We feel pinch to submit that our units are also facing extreme financial hardship as a consequence of which we are unable to discharge our financial commitments. With the steep increase in collector rates there are no customer for buying the property which is available at lower prices but stamp duty will be payable on the double of the price. The actual deals will be executed at the actual market price which will be 60% lower than the rates fixed by the Administration. The difference between the actual sale price & the registry price will create major problem with the Income Tax Department who will charge capital gain tax on the registry amount, which will run into crores of Rupees.
We request you to kindly look into the matter and  reduce the collector rates by at least 50% which will  help the citizen of Chandigarh  to finalize the deals which are already stuck up due to high collector rates. By reducing the collector rates even the Administration will earn crores of Rupees in the shape of stamp duty .
