22nd JN Berry Memorial Oration on Kawasaki Disease at Advanced Cardiac Centre, PGI

Chandigarh 25th October:- The Department of Cardiology will organize the 22nd JN Berry Memorial Oration on October 26, 2017 from 04.00pm to 05.00pm at Advanced Cardiac Centre, PGIMER, Chandigarh. The oration will be delivered by Prof Etsuko Tsuda, Chief National Cardiovascular Centre, Osaka, Japan. The Oration is named after Prof J N Berry who was among the founding member of the Department of Cardiology at PGIMER, Chandigarh.
The topic for oration is ‘Long term studies in Kawasaki Disease’. An eminent Paediatric Cardiologist, Dr Etsuko is the acknowledged world expert on long-term follow-up of children who develop coronary artery abnormalities following Kawasaki disease. She is also associated with Dr Tomisaku Kawasaki who first described the disease in the year 1967.This disease is prevalent in India and worldwide. She has devoted herself to fostering research within Japan and internationally to help solve the mysteries surrounding coronary abnormalities in Kawasaki disease. She has been most supportive, gracious and collaborative, focusing on advancing the understanding of the disease to improve patient care and outcomes.
Kawasaki Disease is a common vasculitic disorder in Children. It is a disease of very peculiar etiology involving the blood vessels including the coronary arteries. The exact cause is still an enigma, it is being described that tropospheric particles from north-eastern China carried the causative toxins probably from fungus. This disease causes acute febrile illness in childhood which is self-limited but around 2% of patient died from complication of coronary vasculitis. Coronary artery aneurysm as occur as sequlae in around 20-25% of untreated patients. This disease may be missed in the childhood and patient can present in the adult age group with coronary artery aneurysm and its subsequent complications.
