India Has Highest Number of Heart Ailment Patients in World: Dr. H K Bali

Chandigarh 01^st April, 2019:- Of the estimated population of more than 1.30 billion in India, about 45 million people suffer from heart ailments (coronary artery disease), which will result in the country getting odd distinction of having highest number of cases of cardiovascular disease in the world, said renowned interventional cardiologist Dr H K Bali, Chairman Cardiac Sciences, PARAS Superspecialty Hospital Panchkula.

Dr H K Bali was interacting with media persons at the press meet held to detail about Panchkula's first center of Excellence for Cardiac Sciences along with Dr Rana Sandeep Singh Director CTVS, Dr Sanjib Rawat Attending Consultant CTVS,  Dr Mahaesh Garg Sr. Consultant Cardiology and Dr Priyanka Gupta, Consultant Cardiac Anesthesia from Paras Super Specialty Hospital, Panchkula. 

Warning that India may turn into world capital of coronary artery diseases, Dr Bali said heart disease has escalated among the younger generation with a significant risk in both males and females. Number of young Indians are suffering from coronary artery disease, owing to their poor lifestyle, and if this continues the future looks even more dangerous. Sharing his experiences of more than 30 years in cardiology with 15000 cardiac interventions, he added that till a decade ago, the doctors hardly came across young patients with heart problems. He said that Now, we get many cases where people in the 25-35 age group are diagnosed with heart disease.

Talking about the global scene in this context he added that in India heart diseases related deaths have risen by 34 % in last 26 years on contrary the death rate due to cardiovascular rate has declined significantly by 41 % in US from 1990 to 2016.

Sharing about the cardiac health facilities available  at Paras Super specialty  Panchukula to help people live healthy, he said that the center will be a center of Excellence for Cardiac Sciences since all the facilities like Primary Angioplasty, Complex Angioplasties, Biventricular Pacemakers ( CRT), Combo Devices, ICDs, Carotid Artery Stenting, Peripheral Artery and below knee interventions, Management of Aortic Dissections and Aortic Aneurysms would be available under one roof.

Highlighting the facilities available in the field of Cardio Thoracic and Vascular Surgery Dept , Dr Rana Sandeep Singh said that facilities of Coronary Artery By Pass Surgery, ASD,VSD (Hole in hear) , Valve replacement surgeries, Aortic Surgery, Pediatric and Neonatal open and closed heart surgeries, Minimally invasive Cardiac Surgery, Lung& Thoracic Surgery for Lung Tumor removal, Empyema, Mediastinal masses are now available at PARAS superspeciality Hospital Panchkula.,

Dr Rana Sandeep Singh said that in India 3,00,000 children are born with heart defects every year. But due to very limited facilities available in Pead Cardiac Surgeries and Intervention, more that 50 percent of them are deprived of timely cardiac interventions. He also highlighted that recent advances in cardiovascular diagnostics and therapeutics have increased survival of infants and children with CHDs. Unfortunately, access to quality care for children with Congenital Heart disease is available only in big cities  and very few hospitals in this part of country are offering these surgeries.

He added that the warning signs of Congenital Heart Disease in infants and children may include a heart murmur or abnormal heart sound, cyanosis (a bluish tint to the skin, fingernails and/or lips), fast breathing, poor feeding, poor weight gain, an inability to do activities and excessive sweating.
