Fashion Design Students of NIIFT Create Collections with Varied Themes: Ensembles to be Showcased at ‘Anukama 2019’

Chandigarh 20th May:- All set to join the fashion industry, the graduating students of the Fashion Design Department of Northern India Institute of Fashion Technology (NIIFT), Mohali showcased their creative talent at a preview of ‘Anukama 19’- the Annual Design Collection show. The show would be held on the 24th, May 2019 at Shivalik Public School, Mohali. 
The show will present a rich blend of 54 lovely collections. The students also have creatively used woven, knits, woolen blends, silk, metal art, digital printing, screen printing, to enhance the creativity of their themes and collection. The show will be Choreographed by Dr. Simrita Singh and Ms. Navdeep Kaur.
The themes of ensembles created give very pertinent social messages, which vary from making people aware about global warming to empowering trans-genders. To bring upfront the discrimination against trans-genders and for changing one’s mindset towards them, a collection ‘Sab Rab De Bande’ designed by Jagriti was displayed at the preview. In fact trans-genders will be walking the ramp wearing the collection during ‘Anukama 2019’. Then the message of global warming has also been sounded in ‘Wake up humans, You are endangered too’ by Simardeep Kaur. In ‘Gurdasta’ by Dilman Kaur Dhami, Punjab’s rich Sikh and Architecture has been encapsulated. ‘Fusion Fashion by Bhawna let’s walk with tribal tradition’, has brought alive tribal art in its myriad forms. The dying art of ‘Thangka’ paintings (Tibetan art) has been brought centre-stage in the collection by Anusha. There is a collection ‘Tha Se Thatera’ dedicated to Punjab’s Thatera art which has also been accepted in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list. There were other very creative collections showcased.

K S Brar, Director, NIIFT said that Anukama gives a wonderful platform to the budding designer and imbibes in them the necessary confidence to walk shoulder to shoulder with the best in the fashion design industry. They help to set the future trends and fashion leads for both domestic and international brands.
Inderjit Singh, Registrar said that NIIFT has always been in the top league of fashion institutes in the country and is ranked 9th in the country.”
Dr. Poonam AggarwalPrincipal said that NIIFT is poised to expand and enter the next level of Design education as per needs of the apparel industry.
Deepti Sharma, Coordinator Anukama Fashion show and HOD of Fashion Design Department said that it has been wonderful to see the students working on their collections for the past five months. The whole experience of watching them evolve from a student to being a professional designer was enriching and very satisfying.
Three years of learning, toil, trials and tribulations will culminate at the annual ramp presentation – Anukama ‘2019. This final presentation is an integration of the learning that the students imbibe during their education at the institute. Through the media of colors, materials, finishes and techniques, students express individual statements as design solution.
For the first time as a departure from tradition and on the request of the students, some of the students’ opted to do their internship with export houses and design houses. Their learning is reflected in their designs.
An eminent jury made up of fashion designers, industry experts and art proponent were invited to evaluate the collection for the awards.
