International Red Cross Invites Entries for Enable Makeathon to Help Develop Affordable: Assistive Solutions for Persons with Disabilities

Chandigarh 27^th September:- The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Global Disability Innovation Hub (GDI Hub) are calling for entries for “Enable Makeathon 2.0” to crowd source new, innovative solutions by and with persons with disabilities (PwDs) for challenges faced by them. Applications are invited from PwDs, designers, the scientific and innovation community, manufacturers and entrepreneurs. The deadline for the applications is 30 September 2017. This year, the programme addresses 12 accessibility and employability related challenges faced by persons with hearing or sight impairment or with locomotor disabilities.

A panel of experts will review the entries and 15 teams with the most interesting and innovative ideas will be shortlisted to participate in the co-creation camp where they will interact with PwDs, designers and investors, mentors and domain experts. This year, the Enable Makeathon 2.0 (EM2) co-creation camps will take place simultaneously in: Bengaluru, India hosted by the ICRC and in London, UK hosted by the GDI Hub and University College London. After an intense 15-day co-creation programme, 10 teams and their product prototypes will advance to the next stage of the competition. These product prototypes will undergo further refinement and market and user-testing phase for the next 6 weeks. The grand finale will be held on 6 February 2018, where three winners will receive cash awards of USD 25,000, USD 15,000 and USD 10,000 and further incubation support. Along with the winners, other teams could potentially have their products incubated in India and the UK, depending upon the relevance and market acceptability of the solutions.  

Commenting on the project, Tarun Sarwal, Innovation Advisor at the ICRC said that enable Makeathon is a unique social movement. It brings together a multidisciplinary team of experts with persons with disability to find solutions for the real challenges that they would like to address. The platform allows us to take ideas from their conceptualisation to execution to testing in a fairly short span of time. Just like the first edition of Enable Makeathon, I have no doubt that Enable Makeathon 2.0 will also be a resounding success and deliver effective, inclusive solutions that are much needed in challenging contexts globally.”

Kerala Tourism Awarded 6 National Tourism Awards

Chandigarh 27^th September:- Kadakampally Surendran, Minister for Tourism, Government of Kerala received six National Tourism Awards 2015-16 from The President Ram Nath Kovind, Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi today. The Department of Tourism, Government of Kerala has been lauded with Hall of fame award for the ‘Most Innovative Use of Information Technology - Social Media / Mobile App’ for the ninth consecutive year. 

Out of these six awards, Kerala Tourism bagged two awards in the marketing category, including ‘Best Tourism Promotion Publicity Material’ for a film tourism brochure- ‘Your Next Blockbuster Destination’ and ‘Excellence in Publishing in Foreign language other than English’ for a Spanish Brochure titled “Reanimar – Enel Propio Pais de Dios”, conceived and developed by Stark Communications. The film tourism brochure highlights the picturesque beaches, exotic wildlife, hill stations and unexplored backwaters that are amongst just a few of the prime locations that can be used to shoot any form of media. The Spanish brochure encapsulates the key attractions of the state, highlighting why Kerala is considered to be the most sought-after destination across the world.

The state tourism also bagged an award for the Best Responsible Tourism Initiative for ‘Kumarakom’. The spirit of Kerala’s Responsible Tourism is based on the availability of plenty of natural resources, skilled manpower, supportive entrepreneurial community, strong local-self-governments, civil-society organizations, multitude of micro enterprises, streams of professionals and academicians, responsible media and responsive tourism industry. All of these initiatives provide the state an ideal setting to implement and practice it.

Speaking about the significance of the responsible tourism initiative, Kadakampally Surendran, Honorable Minister for Tourism, Government of Kerala stated that it give us immense pleasure to be lauded with the prestigious National Tourism Awards in six different categories. Kerala Tourism has been focused on promoting the concept of ‘Responsible Tourism’ for protecting environment and conserving cultural heritage. And, receiving award for this significant initiative of the state emboldens the tourism department to keep up the positive momentum.

Moreover, the state was lauded with 3 National Awards in private sector. Lotus Destinations Pvt. Ltd., Cochin bagged award for Best Tour Operator Promoting Niche segments other than MICE and adventure and Vivanta by Taj, Kumarakom received award for Best hotel – 4 star category and Somatheeram Research Institute & Ayurveda Hospital Pvt. Ltd bagged award for Best Wellness Centre.

With the aim to promote river-cruise tourism, the Government of Kerala has envisioned Rs 300-crore project for nine rivers in Kannur and Kasaragod. In addition, the State government is planning to develop quite a few adventure parks for adventure enthusiasts. For which, the government allocated Rs. 45 crore for Prasadam project and Rs. 20 crore for Green Carpet scheme for Alappuzha, Enranjil, Neyyar and Thenmala.

Dr. Venu V, Principal Secretary, Department of tourism, Government of Kerala said that receiving such prominent awards for the innovative marketing strategies and the usage of technology in tourism have enhanced the profile of the state as a sought-after destination across the world. Over the years, the persistent recognitions for Kerala in the national forum have positioned the state as a preferred tourist destination for domestic as well as international tourists.

Chandigarh Police Organizes Awareness Programme on “Organ Donation and Role of Police in Organ Donation"

Chandigarh 27^th September:- An awareness programme   on “Organ Donation and  Role of Police in Organ Donation.’”  was organized in collaboration with Mohan Foundation in  Recruit Training Centre(RTC) , Sector-26, Chandigarh under the guidance of Tajender Singh Luthra, D.G.P., U.T., Chandigarh and under the supervision of Ravi Kumar, S.P./ Operations & Training. 167 police officers (Inspector, Sub Inspectors, Assistant Sub Inspectors, Head Constables and Constables) have attended this programme.

Ms. Deeplika, Project Manager, Mohan Foundation explained as to which organs can be donated by a diseased person and living person. She also explained the concept of Brain Death and its clinical evaluation.

Sudhir Dewan, Director, Mohan Foundation spoke on the role of police especially in MLC cases. He informed that in India there is an accident death every 3.7 minutes and 66% of the accident victims can be counselled for Organ Donation. Sudhir Dewan said that Chandigarh Police has always played a proactive role in case proceedings and also in creating Green Corridors

The objective of this programme was to create awareness among the police personnel regarding   donation of organs and to discuss the important role of police in this regard to save a life and  also in creating Green Corridors while transporting the human organs.

AIHM Celebrates “World Tourism Day”

Chandigarh 27^th September:- Dr. Ambedkar Institute of Hotel Management, Catering and Technology, Sector-42D, a premier institute providing hospitality education, an autonomous body under Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, celebrated “World Tourism Day” with zeal and fervor.

Keeping in mind the great old saying “ Athithi Devo Bhavah” which literary means the “Guest is God” ,the students of the institute visited the Chandigarh Railway station , Chandigarh airport to overwhelm the passengers by giving them a rose bud and wishing them “Happy tourism Day” with a wide smile. Around 100 students of the Institute also displayed a great passion for tourism while participating in “Run for Tourism” at Sukhna Lake organized by Chandigarh Administration.

The Institute organized many competitions which were held on an inter college level. Around 200 students from various colleges and institutes around the city like GCG-42, GCG-11, CIHM, Home Science College, Punjab University, and State Council of Educational Research participated in these competitions enthusiastically and made this event a joyous success. The competitions held to celebrate this occasion were:

·         Poster making

·         Rangoli making

The participating students were judged on the criteria of relevance with the theme and creativity. The winners of the events were:

One of the Judges at the event said that the participants have truly captured the essence of nature with their photography and their floral incarnations. Our beautiful city of Chandigarh has been done justice in the posters by the students.

This was followed by a cake demonstration by Chef Sucharu Sharma, faculty of the institute which was open to general public.

Mrs. Bharti Tyagi, the principal of the Institute commended the students for their creativity and said that tourism offers a wonderful connecting thread between visitor and host community. Such contact between people of different backgrounds is a very foundation for tolerance. In the world struggling for peaceful coexistence, tourism builds bridges and contributes to peace. It makes me contented to see the competitive spirit among participants and I hope to organize many such events for the future. The day concluded with the award ceremony for acknowledging the efforts of the winners.

The organising duo held a press meets to share details about the upcoming Exhibition at The Lalit which is partnering in the event. Punjab Unit of ‘Mission Modi PM:2019’ Announced

PU Organizes Cleanliness Drive Outside Deptt. of Museum of Ancient Indian History

Chandigarh 27^th September:- Department has organized a massive cleanliness Drive outside the Departmental Museum of Ancient Indian History, Culture & Archaeology  for fresh students here today to make them aware of the important drive being undertaken by Panjab University, Chandigarh for getting premises clean and green.  The Research Scholars, Faculty & Non teaching staff also participated in this massive drive.  The students cleaned the entire   area around the Departmental Museum.  They shared their experience with the fellow students & disposed off the garbage collected by them in the main dustbin placed at some distance from the Departmental museum. The students requested the Chairperson that such drives should be regular feature of the Department so that the Departmental museum remains clean and become a great attraction   for each and everyone.

Experts Dwell Integrated Approach to Comprehensive Cardiac Management

Chandigarh 27^th September:- We have initiated team approach to deliver comprehensive cardiovascular management in an integrated manner at affordable cost to combat the rising menace of heart disease.

This was stated by Dr. Deepak Puri, Executive Director & Head-Cardiovascular Sciences while addressing a press conference on World Heart Day at Ivy Hospital here today.

Dr Deeepak Puri said that integrated approach to comprehensive cardiovascular management of heart patients is the need of the hour .This includes complete spectrum of management including prevention, early diagnosis and best intervention decided by heart team . 

He shared further that heart bypass surgery is now being done through less   invasive approaches which include beating Heart Surgery, minimally invasive cardiac surgery (MICS) and Endoscopic harvesting of veins and arteries as well as total endoscopic  Robotic assisted coronary bypass (TECAB) . In these new techniques the heart is approached through either side of chest via small incisions.

NSS Day Celebrations at NINE- PGI

Chandigarh 26^th September:- National Service Scheme (NSS) Day was celebrated by NSS Unit of National Institute of Nursing Education, PGIMER, Chandigarh.  The Chief Guest Prof. Rajesh Kumar, Dean, PGIMER, and Head School of Public Health presided over the function. Mrs. Meenakshi Agnihotri and Mrs. Shabana Perveen organized the function under the guidance of Dr. Sandhya Ghai, Principal, NINE. A brief report of the NSS activities was depicted with photographs of the events in the previous year. The objectives & motto of NSS was highlighted by the senior volunteer. Prof. Rajesh Kumar encouraged volunteers to participate in activities which bring them close to community. He appreciated the NSSS volunteers for various activities they performed last year. A cultural programme including patriotic songs, dance on women empowerment, skit on social evils etc was carried out by the volunteers.

Dr.  Sandhya Ghai, appreciated the organizers and volunteers for the wonderful program. Citing the famous saying “Charity begins at home”, she highlighted the importance of moral values inculcated during child hood at home by the parents and then by teachers in school & college. She encouraged volunteers to carry out services to the suffering and downtrodden community not only as a volunteer of NSS but as a human being anywhere in neighborhood or around wherever it is needed.  She further added that we are lucky that we are into nursing profession & get opportunity to serve the sick. She encouraged the volunteers to serve the sick and community whole heartedly. 

At the end new volunteers were administered the pledge.

Consulate General of Canada Delivers Talk at GGSCW-26

Chandigarh 26^th September:- On the occasion of the International Day of the Girl (October 11), the Consulate General of Canada in Chandigarh, Christopher Gibbins was invited by the Student's Welfare Committee of Guru Gobind Singh College for Women, Sector 26, Chandigarh on September 26, 2017, to deliver a talk on vital social issues. The Consulate General addressed the girls on growing rate of violence, poverty and discrimination. Focusing on the women, he mentioned gender inequality being prevalent even in developed countries like Canada.

He mentioned that Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau desires his country to progress as a feminist country with equal representation of men and women in the Government. While conclude the talk, he expressed that empowering women will benefit not only the world economy but also free both genders from the shackles of fixed roles to create tangible holistic development of society.
