March:- On the occasion of International Women's Day, PGI organized a
panel discussion 'Women's Health is Important' at the Bhargava Auditorium. The
Director of the institute, Prof S.C.Varma presided over the discussion. In his
opening address, he emphasized the importance of the topic and how health of
women in a society influenced the health of the society in general.
Prof Neelam aggarwal from the department of Gynaecology and
Obstetrics deliberated on reproductive health of women from puberty till
menopause and how education of women could empower women to make better choices
and improve their reproductive health. Madhu Sharma, former chief Dietician of
the institute discussed healthy eating habits, food fads, myths about diet and
the importance of diet in maintaining good health right from childhood.
Prof Sandeep Grover from Department of Psychiatry discussed
different aspects of mental health in women, particularly in modern society and
how to tackle such problems.
Prof Savita Kumari from Department of Internal Medicine
talked about common health problems in women, the relationship between healthy
diet and good health, the importance of seeking medical help early in the
course of the disease and treatment compliance.
Prof F.D. Patel, former Prof of department of Radiotherapy
discussed about common cancers in women, the causes of cancer, early warning
signs and screening of cancer breast and uterine cervix. The session was
attended by students and staff of PGI and also several citizens of Chandigarh.
